Cherhill White Horse, Hill figure in Cherhill Down, England
Cherhill White Horse is a chalk carving on the northern slope of Cherhill Down near Calne in Wiltshire. The white figure stands out clearly against the green hillside and can be seen from quite a distance away.
The figure was created in 1780 under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Alsop, who directed the work from a nearby hill using a megaphone. It belongs to the group of older chalk horses in England that were made during the same period as other figures in the region.
The Cherhill White Horse represents England's third oldest hill figure, following the ancient carvings at Westbury and Uffington sites.
You can see the figure from a viewpoint along the A4 road, or walk up via a footpath to see it from closer range. The view from the road is often the clearest since the design is meant to be seen from distance.
Originally the figure had an eye made from stones and glass that was later removed by collectors. This led to the eye eventually being replaced with a different material.
