Wandsworth Bridge

Wandsworth Bridge, Steel cantilever road bridge in Wandsworth, England

Wandsworth Bridge is a steel cantilever structure spanning the Thames between Wandsworth and Hammersmith and Fulham in London. The crossing measures approximately 200 meters long and features a functional engineering design built entirely from steel.

Construction began in 1937 to replace a toll bridge that had served since 1873, with completion arriving on September 25, 1940. The project took place amid World War II conditions, shaping decisions about materials and design throughout the build.

The bridge maintains its original blue paint scheme from World War II, when it received this color treatment to reduce visibility during air raids.

Crossing during peak hours means dealing with substantial vehicle traffic, as tens of thousands of cars use this route daily. The structure accommodates pedestrians and cyclists as well, though they should expect busy conditions and limited space.

The structure still wears its original blue paint from World War II, applied to make it less visible from the air during bombing raids. This wartime color scheme has persisted for generations, becoming a defining feature of the crossing's appearance.
