John A. Osborne Airport, airport in Montserrat
John A. Osborne Airport is the only airport on the British Overseas Territory of Montserrat in the Caribbean. It has a short runway suited only to smaller propeller aircraft, handling both scheduled and private flights.
Montserrat's original airport, W. H. Bramble Airport, was made unusable after the volcanic eruptions of the 1990s buried much of the southern part of the island. This new airport was then built in the north to restore air access to the island.
The airport bears the name of John A. Osborne, a former Chief Minister of Montserrat, which reflects how the island honors its political figures. His name on the terminal building is often the first thing visitors notice when they arrive.
The airport is in the north of the island, close to Brades, and is easy to reach from most inhabited areas. The terminal is small, so check-in and boarding tend to move quickly.
Because the Soufrière Hills volcano made the southern part of the island uninhabitable, the current airport is the only one ever built on the livable northern section. The runway is short enough that jet aircraft cannot land here, meaning every connection relies on small turboprop planes.
