Trwyn Du Lighthouse, Maritime beacon at Penmon Point, Wales
Trwyn Du Lighthouse is a stone tower at Penmon Point in Wales, rising 29 meters above the water with black and white bands for daytime navigation. The cylindrical structure was constructed from stone and marks an important landmark in this coastal area.
The structure was built in 1838 by architect James Walker following the Rothsay Castle disaster in 1831, which killed 130 people. This tragedy led to the need for this important navigation point.
The building reflects Welsh maritime tradition through its classic design and helps ships navigate the challenging waters between Anglesey and Puffin Island safely.
Visitors reach the structure from the B5109 road that runs from Beaumaris through Llangoed, with parking available near the site. The best time to visit is during good weather and daylight to see the tower's markings clearly.
A bell signal sounds every 30 seconds, creating a steady rhythm that has warned ships through Penmon Sound since the 19th century. This sound is a distinctive feature that seafarers have known for generations.
