Goodwood House, Historic country house in Westhampnett, England
The property sits on a large rural plot near Chichester and displays Regency-period architectural features with columns, tall windows and extended parkland. The interior rooms are furnished with historical paintings, furniture and decorative pieces from several centuries, arranged across the different chambers.
The residence passed into the Lennox family at the end of the 17th century after being acquired from earlier owners. Over the centuries the Dukes of Richmond expanded the building several times, shaping its current character through alterations in the 18th and early 19th centuries.
The name comes from a field name meaning 'good wood', which once described the woodland that surrounded the place. Today the rooms reflect the taste of the Georgian and Regency periods, with furniture and fabrics chosen to show how the nobility lived through the centuries.
Guided tours of the State Apartments allow visitors to see the interior rooms and collections. The grounds offer walking paths through the parkland and surrounding woodland, making it worth spending a few hours exploring the wider estate.
The estate contains a motor racing circuit as well as a working farm that operates on organic principles. The car manufacturer Rolls-Royce also uses part of the grounds as its company headquarters, bringing together tradition and modern industry in one place.
