Skomer Island, Protected island nature reserve in Pembrokeshire, Wales.

Skomer Island is a protected nature reserve off the coast of Pembrokeshire with rocky cliffs, open grassland, and heathland covering much of its terrain. Smaller islets surround the main island, and the landscape creates distinct habitats across the site.

People first lived on the island around 5,000 years ago, as shown by archaeological remains scattered across the site. The Codd family was the last to live here permanently, leaving in the mid-20th century.

The name comes from Viking origins, with Skalmey meaning cleft or split island. Today, locals and visitors connect this heritage to the long maritime traditions of the Welsh coast.

Access is limited to about 250 visitors daily since the site is a protected reserve. Ferries depart from Martin's Haven, though sailings depend heavily on weather and tidal conditions.

The island hosts the world's largest breeding colony of Manx shearwaters, with hundreds of thousands of pairs returning each year. Visitors can witness these seabirds in their natural breeding grounds during the right season.
