Northwood is a residential suburb in northwest London that forms part of the Borough of Hillingdon. The area consists of Victorian-era houses along tree-lined streets laid out in a triangular pattern and surrounded by woodland areas.
The first written mention as Northwode dates from 1435, when the place was a small hamlet supplying firewood to London. From the 1870s onward, the settlement gradually transformed into a residential area with the construction of the Metropolitan line.
The name comes from the 15th century and originally referred to the woodlands that once surrounded the settlement. Many streets today run through green residential neighborhoods lined with old trees that preserve a quiet character.
Two Underground stations on the Metropolitan line connect the area to central London in about 40 minutes travel time. The residential neighborhood is best explored on foot, with streets that are well accessible and paths mostly level.
The Northwood Headquarters has served since 1939 as the command center for joint military operations of the British Armed Forces. The facility remains closed to the public but plays a central role in the country's defense planning.
