Snettisham Hoard, Iron Age treasure discovery in Norfolk, England
Description
The Snettisham Hoard is a collection of over 150 neck rings made from precious metals, discovered between 1948 and 1973 in Norfolk. The objects are made from gold, silver, and copper alloy, with many pieces surviving in partial or fragmented form.
History
This hoard dates to around 70 BC in the Iron Age and ranks among the largest metalwork discoveries from that period in Britain. Coins from France found with the collection allowed researchers to establish its precise date.
Culture
The intricate patterns on the neck rings show how skilled metalworkers were in this period and reveal what kinds of objects people valued most. Such jewelry likely served as a sign of wealth and status within the community.
Practical
You can view the main objects at two different locations: the British Museum in London and the Norwich Castle Museum in Norfolk. Since both museums have different opening schedules, check ahead to plan your visit accordingly.
Did you know?
Electron microscopy reveals wear patterns and cut marks on the rings that suggest deliberate damage. Researchers believe these pieces were intentionally broken apart, possibly for ritual or ceremonial purposes.
