Young Vic, Theatre in The Cut, London, England
The Young Vic is a theatre and performing arts centre in The Cut, Lambeth, London. The main auditorium provides 420 seats arranged so that spectators sit close to the stage on all levels, directly experiencing the action.
Frank Dunlop founded this theatre in 1970 with a vision to give a younger generation access to contemporary drama and classic texts. Since then the house has produced numerous shows that later transferred to larger London stages and international venues.
The name refers to the nearby Old Vic Theatre and signals the original mission to support younger artists and attract new audiences. Today visitors of all generations fill the auditorium, many returning to see both familiar productions and less familiar pieces.
The building sits a few minutes' walk from Waterloo station and is also served by several bus routes. Some productions are streamed live, offering an alternative to attending in person.
The building was originally planned as a temporary solution, yet it remained for over five decades and became a fixture in London's theatre landscape. The Genesis Network supports emerging directors and designers with mentoring programs and resources that help them enter the industry.
