Northern Ireland Executive, Executive branch in Stormont Estate, Belfast, United Kingdom
The Northern Ireland Executive is the government of Northern Ireland based in Stormont House on the Stormont Estate in Belfast. The body directs public services and carries out legislative decisions for the region's population.
This form of government emerged in December 1999 after the Good Friday Agreement following decades of conflict. The agreement ended direct rule from Westminster and transferred decision-making power to a regional body.
The administration works through shared responsibility, with ministerial posts divided among several parties. This structure aims to involve both major communities in Northern Ireland in decision-making.
The administration works with eight ministries including health, education, and economy. Each ministry is led by an appointed minister responsible for specific public sectors.
In February 2024, Michelle O'Neill took office as first minister, becoming the first nationalist politician in this role. She works as equal partner with deputy first minister Emma Little-Pengelly from the unionist community.
