Concerts at Knebworth House take place on the open grounds of a historic country estate in Hertfordshire, England. The stage is set up on the lawn in front of the house, and the surrounding fields allow the site to hold a very large number of people during major events.
The estate started hosting concerts in 1974 when the Allman Brothers Band performed before a very large crowd. Over the following years, Knebworth became one of the best-known outdoor rock music venues in the United Kingdom.
The gently sloping lawn forms a natural bowl shape that gives most of the audience a clear view of the stage without any fixed stands. Visitors stand or sit on the open grass, which gives the event a feeling closer to a field gathering than a typical concert hall.
For large events, several entrance gates open across the site, so arriving early helps with orientation and avoids the busiest arrival periods. Temporary food stalls and toilet facilities are spread around the grounds, but waiting times near the most popular spots can be long when the crowd is large.
Pink Floyd's 1990 performance at Knebworth was recorded and parts of it were later used for their album Delicate Sound of Thunder. The open landscape produced a sound that was noticeably different from what a studio or indoor venue would have captured.
