Gough's Cave, Show cave in Cheddar, England
The cave system extends 3.4 kilometers into the Mendip Hills and contains multiple chambers with limestone formations and underground river passages.
Richard Cox Gough discovered and excavated new sections of the cave between 1892 and 1898, transforming it from a small opening into a public attraction.
Archaeological findings from 14,700 years ago reveal evidence of Magdalenian hunter-gatherers who practiced ritualistic activities and created tools from animal bones.
The first 820 meters of the cave system are open for guided tours, featuring electric lighting installed in 1899 for visitor navigation.
The cave maintains specific temperature and humidity conditions that make it suitable for maturing Cheddar cheese, continuing a centuries-old tradition.
