Isaac Roberts’ Observatory, Private astronomical observatory in Crowborough, England
Isaac Roberts' Observatory was a private astronomical facility on Crowborough Hill with two telescopes housed in a copper-clad wooden dome. The equipment consisted of a 7-inch refractor and a 20-inch reflector used for celestial observations.
Roberts established this observatory in 1885 at his residence Starfield on Crowborough Hill and operated it until his death in 1904. During this period he conducted groundbreaking astronomical research that advanced understanding of the cosmos.
Roberts used this facility to photograph celestial objects, helping advance early understanding of galaxy structure through detailed images. His work contributed to broader knowledge about the nature of nebulae and cosmic formations.
The observatory sits atop Crowborough Hill at about 268 meters elevation, offering clear views for sky observation. Visitors should expect the hilltop location and plan for walking uphill to reach the site.
Roberts captured the first photograph showing the spiral structure of Andromeda Galaxy on December 29, 1888. This groundbreaking image changed how astronomers understood the scale and structure of the cosmos.
