Old Lodge, Grade II listed gatehouse in Hartfield, England.
Old Lodge is a protected gatehouse in Hartfield built with coursed sandstone rubble walls and tiled roofs arranged in a U-shaped layout. The structure features multiple wings with sandstone chimneys and sits near the B2026 road as part of a larger estate property.
Built between 1900 and 1903 for Earl De La Warr, this gatehouse was designated Grade II listed status in 1991 by the National Heritage List for England. The building represents late Victorian estate architecture when such structures served as important entrances to grand properties.
The main staircase incorporates Jacobean design elements with detailed balusters and newel posts displaying heraldic patterns throughout the structure.
The building is visible from public areas but remains a private property under heritage protection. While interior access is not available, the exterior can be viewed from the nearby road to appreciate its architectural features.
The northeastern front displays two storeys with attics and triangular gables topped by a projecting porch. An attached squash court with tie beam construction reflects how Victorian country estates served multiple recreational purposes beyond housing for estate staff.
