Aldenham Works, Bus maintenance facility in Elstree, England
Aldenham Works was a bus overhaul facility in Elstree with multiple buildings, a test circuit, and a tilt test shed for checking vehicle stability. The complex had an assembly line where buses were comprehensively serviced and repaired.
The site was originally planned as a Northern Line extension in the 1930s but transformed into a Handley Page Halifax bomber factory during World War II. After the war, it evolved into a major bus maintenance facility.
The works appeared in the 1962 film Summer Holiday starring Cliff Richard and in a 1957 British Transport documentary. These film appearances brought attention to the site and showed what daily operations looked like during that era.
The facility was closed to the public and designed primarily for employees and scheduled visits rather than open access. Today the site is best observed from outside the grounds when traveling to Elstree, as the buildings are not widely accessible to visitors.
The works used an innovative body exchange system where buses could return to service with replacement bodies while their original structures underwent major repairs separately. This approach allowed vehicles to get back on the road faster.
