Aberthaw Lime Works, Industrial heritage site near Fontygary Bay, Wales
Aberthaw Lime Works is a limestone processing facility on the Welsh coast with two surviving stone kilns standing vertically. The structures are constructed from solid masonry and sit within the remains of a larger industrial complex.
The facility opened in the late 1800s and quickly expanded into a major production center for limestone-based products. It supplied materials to significant construction projects across the region and beyond the coast.
The site played a central role in the region's working life and shaped the community for generations. It remains a visible reminder of how industrial labor transformed coastal settlements and left its mark on the landscape.
The site sits along a coastal walking route and can be reached fairly easily by following the marked path. Visit during calm weather since the path runs near the cliff edge and strong winds can make walking difficult.
The mortar produced here had the rare ability to harden underwater, making it essential for lighthouse construction along treacherous coasts. This special quality allowed engineers to build and reinforce structures directly in the sea.
