Fonmon Castle, Medieval castle in Rhoose, Wales.
Fonmon Castle is a medieval fortress on a substantial estate in Wales, built with limestone and blue lias stone walls. The original rectangular stone keep was constructed in the early 1200s and later expanded with additional structures and residential wings.
The castle began as a timber fortification in the 12th century following the Norman conquest and was rebuilt in stone in the early 1200s. This transition from wood to stone reflected broader changes in medieval fortress design across England and Wales.
The castle remained in the hands of just two families throughout its existence, shaping it as a lived-in home rather than a ceremonial stronghold. This long family ownership is visible in how the rooms and grounds were adapted across generations.
The site features walking trails, play areas, and several themed attractions that can be explored at your own pace. Allow several hours to properly see both the castle buildings and the surrounding grounds.
Excavations in 2024 uncovered a previously unknown cemetery dating to the 6th or 7th century on the grounds. This discovery reveals that the site had religious significance long before the stone castle was built.
