Alfred Denny Building, University science building in Sheffield, England
The Alfred Denny Building is a seven-story structure with red brick walls that houses scientific departments on the University of Sheffield's Western Bank Campus. Inside are lecture theaters, laboratories, computer facilities, and specialized centers that support students with disabilities and dyslexia.
The building was constructed between 1965 and 1971, originally planned as an administrative center but later converted into a biology facility. This change reflected the university's shifting priorities as it expanded its scientific programs.
The building houses the Alfred Denny Museum, which takes its name from the university's first biology professor who started the original collection in Firth Court. The museum reflects the foundational role this professor played in establishing life sciences at the institution.
The building is straightforward to enter and has elevators connecting all seven floors, making access to different areas easy. Visitors should know that certain laboratories and specialized centers may require prior permission to access.
From 2014 to 2016, the south wall displayed a poem printed on fabric that removed two tons of pollutants through catalytic oxidation. This experimental artwork was a practical application of technology designed to improve air quality.
