Hicks Building, University building in Sheffield, England
Hicks Building is an academic complex in Sheffield comprising three connected sections that house science departments. The main structure rises 40 meters high with red-brick cladding, while two shorter wings feature blue tiling on their exterior surfaces.
The building was completed in 1962 and named after William Mitchinson Hicks, a scientist linked to the university. Major renovation and re-cladding work took place in 2005, updating its external appearance.
The building serves as a center for mathematics, statistics, physics and astronomy studies at Sheffield University. Students and researchers move between these scientific departments within the same connected complex on a daily basis.
The building contains around 179 computers distributed across multiple rooms for student use. The largest workspace provides 83 workstations in a single room and allows flexible working arrangements.
A connecting bridge spans between the main section and the lower wing, visibly linking different architectural styles across the complex. This transition point clearly displays the contrast between the red and blue colored materials that define each part.
