Sheffield Bioincubator

Sheffield Bioincubator is a research facility in Sheffield with modern laboratory spaces and office areas spread across five floors. The building connects its different sections through an elevator system and provides space for scientific work and collaborative innovation.

The facility opened in 2006 with support from the European Regional Development Fund, the University of Sheffield, and Yorkshire Forward. This founding marked the beginning of a new partnership between academic institutions and regional businesses in the city.

The building transformed from a commercial innovation center into an educational space, now containing the Modern Languages Teaching Centre and Department of Archaeology.

Access to the facility is best arranged through its connection with the nearby Kroto Innovation Centre, where visitors can find further information. The partnerships between the university and local businesses mean that tours may need to be arranged in advance.

Researchers at this location developed methods for early detection of oral cancer in collaboration with a medical technology company and a teaching hospital. This work shows how partnerships between academic and medical institutions locally can lead to practical applications.
