Altcar Training Camp, Military shooting range in Little Altcar, England.
Altcar Training Camp is a military shooting range and training facility in the village of Little Altcar, in the county of Merseyside in northwest England. The site covers a mix of beach, marshland, fields, and woodland, and contains several shooting ranges alongside accommodation, dining rooms, and conference spaces.
The camp was founded in 1860 when William Molyneux, 4th Earl of Sefton, gave the land to the North West Reserve Forces. It grew steadily over the following decades to serve different branches of the armed forces and their changing training needs.
Altcar Training Camp is used by British Army reserve units and cadet groups who come here for shooting practice and field training. Watching the daily routine of the camp gives a concrete sense of how reserve forces in the UK train and organize themselves.
The site is divided into clearly separated areas, making it easy to move between different training zones once you know the layout. Access is generally restricted to authorized personnel and registered groups, so it is worth confirming visit conditions well in advance.
The grounds are home to Sand Lizards and Natterjack Toads, two species that are rare in the UK and live in protected conservation zones within the active military site. These zones are actively managed to keep the habitat suitable for them, even as training continues nearby.
