Bittell Reservoirs, Double reservoir system in Worcestershire, England
The Bittell Reservoirs consist of two connected water bodies, Upper and Lower Bittell, positioned across countryside between Barnt Green and Longbridge. Walking paths and open banks surround both reservoirs, which together create a water feature that dominates the local landscape.
The reservoirs were built in the late 1700s to supply water to the Worcester and Birmingham Canal and were completed by 1837. This canal infrastructure project became essential to the regional water network and shaped local development for generations.
The reservoirs draw bird watchers throughout the year, who come to spot various water birds and migratory species that pass through the area. The landscape supports a thriving community of wildlife enthusiasts who spend time observing from the banks.
The Upper Bittell is home to the Barnt Green Sailing Club, which offers windsurfing, fishing, and open water swimming during warm months. The shorelines are generally accessible with walking routes available around both reservoirs, making it easy to explore at your own pace.
During the 2017 draining of Upper Bittell, workers found and relocated more than 500 endangered European eels to the nearby canal system. This rescue revealed just how rich the water body is in hidden wildlife.
