Black Mountain transmitting station, Broadcasting facility near Belfast, Northern Ireland.
Black Mountain transmitting station is a broadcasting facility near Belfast, Northern Ireland, featuring a 228-meter-tall steel lattice mast situated at an elevation of 301 meters above sea level. The installation distributes television and radio signals across the Belfast region to serve residential and commercial receivers.
The facility was constructed in 1959 by British Insulated Callender's Cables to transmit signals for the Independent Television Authority through Ulster Television. The location later became a key broadcasting hub as television expanded across the region.
The station expanded television access across Northern Ireland by introducing digital multiplexes that broadcast additional channels including TG4 and RTÉ programs.
The site is positioned on an exposed hilltop and remains visible from many locations across the region. Visitors should be aware that the facility remains operational and some areas may have restricted access.
The mast's elevation allows signals to reach both Northern Ireland and parts of the Republic of Ireland across the border. This gives the station a cross-border role in serving audiences on both sides of the island.
