Irish Republican History Museum, History museum in West Belfast, Northern Ireland
The Irish Republican History Museum is a museum housed in the Conway Mill Complex on Falls Road in West Belfast, displaying thousands of objects related to Irish political history. The collection covers documents, photographs, and personal items gathered from many different sources over several decades.
The museum was founded in 2007 and honors Eileen Hickey, who collected and preserved objects during her time as a prisoner in Armagh Prison. Her personal effort to gather materials became the starting point for what the museum holds today.
Handmade works by Republican prisoners, including paintings and drawings created during their time in detention, are displayed throughout the rooms. These pieces show how people found ways to express themselves even while held captive.
The museum sits inside the Conway Mill Complex on Falls Road, a well-known area of West Belfast that is easy to reach on foot or by bus. A visit pairs naturally with a walk along Falls Road, where murals and other places of historical interest are close by.
A reconstructed cell from Armagh Prison, furnished with original items, shows what daily life looked like for those held there. Many of the objects on display across the museum were kept and hidden by prisoners themselves long before any institution existed to collect them.
