Chipchase Castle, Medieval castle and Jacobean mansion in Chollerton, England.

Chipchase Castle is a fortified tower house joined to a large country mansion in Northumberland, England, sitting on elevated ground above the North Tyne river valley. The tower is built from heavy stone and rises several stories, while the adjoining mansion presents a more regular facade with rows of large windows.

Walter Heron built the original tower in the mid-14th century as a defensive structure during a period of frequent border raids in the region. Cuthbert Heron added the mansion wing in the early 17th century, turning the site from a stronghold into a country residence.

The name Chipchase is thought to derive from old words meaning a hunting chase, which hints at the estate's deep connection to the land and rural life. Visitors walking the grounds can still sense that relationship, with open fields and woodland framing the buildings on every side.

Indoor tours run only during June, while the grounds and formal gardens are open on specific days in other seasons. The site sits in open countryside, so sturdy footwear is helpful and the weather can change quickly.

The estate includes a small chapel built in the early 18th century, which is one of the few surviving private estate chapels of that period still standing in Northumberland. It sits apart from the main house and gives a sense of how self-contained life on such a country estate once was.
