Chipchase Castle

Chipchase Castle is a fortified tower house combined with a large country mansion in Northumberland, featuring a robust stone tower built in the 14th century alongside a classical residential wing from the 17th century. The structures occupy elevated grounds and are surrounded by formal gardens and open lawns.

The original stone tower was built in the mid-14th century by Walter Heron to defend the area from raids. In the early 17th century, Cuthbert Heron added a new mansion wing to transform the site into a comfortable country residence.

The estate shows how English noble homes evolved from practical defense structures into refined country retreats. This blend of fortification and elegance shapes how visitors experience every corner.

The grounds and exterior are accessible year-round, while indoor tours operate only during June. Prepare for country pathways and bring appropriate clothing for changing weather conditions.
