Clifton Country Park, Natural reserve in Salford, England.
Clifton Country Park is a natural reserve in the Irwell Valley of Greater Manchester featuring woodlands, wetlands, open fields, and a large lake. The roughly 220-acre site combines different habitats and connects natural elements within a unified park setting.
The site originated from former quarry and mining operations, including the Wet Earth Colliery that operated from the 1700s through the early 20th century. After the extraction industries closed, the land was transformed into a nature reserve.
Artist L.S. Lowry found inspiration in the Irwell Valley landscapes, and the park now displays wooden sculptures, including a full-size Gruffalo figure along a fairytale trail. Visitors can encounter these art installations while walking and enjoy the same views that once inspired creative minds.
The park features accessible paths around the lake, a visitor center with facilities, and multiple entry points connected to public transport. Visitors should expect muddy or wet ground depending on the season, particularly in lower-lying areas.
The lake is known among anglers for hosting a record-breaking carp, a catch that gained attention within the fishing community. This fishing history makes the marina area of particular interest to those who enjoy angling.
