Dale Head, Mountain summit in Cumbria, United Kingdom.
Dale Head is a mountain summit in the Lake District, Cumbria, sitting at 2,470 feet (753 meters) above sea level. Its steep slopes drop sharply into the Newlands Valley on one side and toward Honister Pass on the other.
The area around Dale Head was shaped in part by the slate and mining industries that operated near Honister for centuries. These activities left traces on the slopes and in the surrounding valleys that are still visible today.
The summit is a key point on the Newlands Round, a classic walking loop that links several peaks across the Lake District. Walkers who complete the route get a clear sense of the open ridgelines and wide views that define this part of Cumbria.
The summit can be reached from several starting points, including Honister Pass, Borrowdale, and Little Town in the Newlands Valley. Paths vary in steepness, and weather on the higher ground can change quickly, so it is worth checking conditions before heading out.
Two small mountain tarns sit on the slopes of Dale Head: the larger Dale Head Tarn and the smaller Launchy Tarn near High Scawdell. Both lie slightly off the main paths and are often passed without notice, though they offer a good reason to slow down on the descent.
