Dawyck Chapel

Dawyck Chapel, Category B listed church in Drumelzier, Scotland.

Description

Dawyck Chapel is a Category B listed stone church building situated within the grounds of Dawyck Botanic Garden near Peebles in the Scottish Borders. The structure contains a medieval font and a bell that was originally cast in 1642 and recast nearly 150 years later.

History

The current building replaced earlier church ruins in 1837, marking a renewal of this religious site. The bell was recast roughly 150 years after its original casting, reflecting centuries of continued use and maintenance.

Culture

The chapel serves as a place of worship and family remembrance, connecting past generations through ritual and tradition. Its location within botanical gardens creates an unusual blend of spiritual and natural spaces that visitors experience together.

Practical

Access to the chapel is best gained through Dawyck Botanic Garden, where visitors receive entry to the surrounding grounds. Wear comfortable shoes as the estate covers a substantial area with multiple attractions to explore.

Did you know?

The building is notable for preserving its medieval font, a rare survival from the Middle Ages within a working church. Its location on the expansive Dawyck estate makes it an unexpected religious landmark set among botanical collections.
