Stobo Castle, Category A listed castle in Scottish Borders, Scotland
Stobo Castle is a fortress in the Scottish Borders with a square main block of two stories and basement, round corner towers, and a taller central section with a porch. The property now operates as a health resort with hotel rooms and a large extension added in 2003 that includes a swimming pool.
The estate came under control of the Graham-Montgomery Baronets in 1767 and became their family seat. This ownership shaped the property's development for many generations afterward.
The estate grounds display Japanese-influenced water gardens and three large artificial lakes that shape the landscape today. Visitors can walk through these designed spaces and notice how water features connect different parts of the property.
The castle now operates as a health resort, so visitors should know it functions primarily as a wellness and hotel facility. It's best to check ahead about which areas are open to day visitors and whether advance notice is needed.
In 1650, this estate along with Dawyck House first introduced horse chestnut trees to Scotland, an early botanical contribution now often overlooked by visitors. The trees planted then can still be seen on the grounds today.
