Foyle Port is a facility near Lisahally with around 440 meters of quay space that accommodates vessels up to 62,000 gross tonnage. The port has specialized cargo handling equipment and provides various marine services.
The port was established in 1854 through an Act of Parliament and quickly became an important commercial hub. By 1905, trade had grown to around 940,000 tons, reflecting its significance for regional commerce.
The port was a major departure point for Irish and Scots-Irish emigrants heading to North America, Scotland, England, and Australia. This chapter of migration remains part of the area's identity.
The port sits on a natural river location with good access for ships of various sizes. Visitors should know this is an active working facility where access to certain areas may be restricted.
In May 1945, a German U-boat fleet surrendered at this location with commanders from the United States, Canada, and the Irish Republic present to witness it. This unusual event marked one of the final chapters of World War II along the Irish coast.
