The Somerset Wildlife Trust acquired this land in 1997 using a Heritage Lottery Grant to establish the reserve. Parts of the former Somerset Coal Canal are integrated into the site's current landscape.
The site maintains traditional land management practices through hay cutting and cattle grazing, preserving centuries-old agricultural methods.
