Gib Hill, Bronze Age burial mound near Arbor Low Stone Circle in Derbyshire, England.
Gib Hill is an oval burial mound located near Middleton-by-Youlgreave in Derbyshire. The earthwork rises steeply from the surrounding landscape and sits close to the Arbor Low Stone Circle.
The mound originated as a Neolithic long barrow before being reshaped with an Early Bronze Age round burial on its surface. Excavations in the 1800s uncovered evidence of these two distinct construction periods.
The burial mound contains four distinct layers of red clay mixed with burnt bone remains, flint pieces, and hazel twigs from ancient ceremonies.
Visitors reach the site by walking across private farmland, with a small parking area marking the entrance. A collection box near the entrance allows visitors to make voluntary donations for site access.
The mound represents two separate burial traditions layered together, with an earlier Neolithic grave chamber later covered by a Bronze Age burial. This layering reveals how funeral practices shifted dramatically across different periods.
