Arbor Low, Neolithic stone circle and henge in Middleton and Smerrill, England.
Arbor Low is a Neolithic stone site with approximately 50 limestone blocks arranged in an oval pattern and surrounded by an earthen bank. The overall site spans about 90 meters across and sits in open countryside.
The site was built during the Late Neolithic period and remained important over many generations. Early excavations uncovered remains showing that people used this place over a long span of time.
The central stone arrangement shows this place served as a gathering site for Neolithic communities. People came here to gather together and mark important occasions.
The site is on private land and reached by a walk of about 300 meters from the parking area. Sturdy shoes are recommended since the terrain is open and exposed to the elements.
The limestone blocks were not quarried but gathered from natural rock outcrops nearby and transported to the site. This reveals how Neolithic people cleverly used available resources and managed to move heavy stone without modern tools.
