High Peak Trail, bridleway in the English Peak District
High Peak Trail is a former railway line converted into a walking and cycling route across the Peak District landscape. The path runs through several tunnels, crosses old viaducts, and passes former station buildings along its length.
The route began as a railway line built in the 1800s, connecting industrial areas across the moorlands. It fell out of use as rail transport changed, and was later revived as a public recreational path.
The path is accessible to all fitness levels and mostly flat with good surfaces for cycling or walking. Clear signage guides you along the route, and parking areas are available at several entry points.
The longest tunnel on the trail, Dove Holes, was originally blasted through rock for steam locomotives over 150 years ago. Modern cyclists now pass through the same passage, experiencing the engineering feat of earlier railway builders.
