Benty Grange helmet, Anglo-Saxon helmet at Weston Park Museum, Sheffield, England
The Benty Grange helmet features an iron framework covered with horn plates, forming a distinct herring-bone pattern across its surface.
Thomas Bateman discovered this seventh-century helmet on May 3, 1848, during his excavation of a tumulus at Benty Grange farm in Derbyshire.
The helmet combines pagan and Christian symbols through its gilt-bronze boar crest and silver cross on the nasal guard, reflecting religious changes.
The helmet weighs 1.4 kilograms and contains traces of leather or cloth lining that provided comfort during military engagements.
Silver rivets with decorative heads shaped like double-headed axes secure the iron framework of this ceremonial and defensive headpiece.
