Exeter Bridge, Road bridge in central Derby, England
Exeter Bridge is a road bridge that crosses the River Derwent and links central areas of Derby. The concrete structure carries vehicle traffic along with pedestrian walkways on both sides.
The current bridge was built in 1929 to replace an older timber structure that had previously crossed at this location. A government transport minister officially opened the new concrete structure.
The bridge displays bas relief sculptures of notable Derby figures that were cast in Cheltenham. These portraits form part of the daily streetscape and tell stories of people who shaped the city.
The bridge is pedestrian-friendly with wide sidewalks and clear signage on both sides for easy navigation. It sits close to other central landmarks and is easily reached on foot.
Heavy work machinery like traction engines and rollers were driven across the bridge during construction to test its strength. These tests demonstrated that the structure could handle extreme loads reliably.
