Gallowgate Barracks, Military barracks in Glasgow, United Kingdom
Gallowgate Barracks was a major military complex on Glasgow's east side with multiple buildings spread across a large site. The facility accommodated around 1,000 soldiers and included a rifle range in its south tunnel for training.
The barracks opened in 1795 and represented Glasgow's first purpose-built military housing facility. Before this, soldiers were billeted with local civilians, a practice that changed with the establishment of dedicated barracks.
The name refers to the gallows gate that once marked Glasgow's eastern edge. The site became a focal point where military life and civilian activity intersected in the east end community.
The site was historically enclosed by high walls, making it a restricted military space. Today, little remains of the original structures, so visitors should expect mostly changed landscape and urban development.
Excavations in 2003 revealed artifacts from two distinct periods of use: military items like brass buttons and ceramic pipes alongside remains from Maxwell's Auld Pighoose Pottery. This discovery shows the ground held industrial and military activity long before the barracks became Glasgow's defining feature.
