Glenesk Folk Museum, Folk museum and cultural center in Tarfside, Scotland
Glenesk Folk Museum occupies a former shooting lodge called The Retreat and presents exhibits on rural life and agricultural tools from past centuries. The collection spans indoor displays and a separate stable building holding objects from various aspects of daily life.
The museum was founded in 1955 by schoolteacher Greta Michie, growing from a small collection into a larger institution. Its development was greatly supported by Lord Dalhousie.
The museum displays traditional musical instruments and historic clothing that reflect how people lived in earlier times. The reconstructed Victorian rooms let visitors step into the domestic life of past generations.
Access involves walking across the grounds, so comfortable footwear is advisable. The building and its exhibits are spread across multiple rooms, so plan enough time to explore everything.
The stable building, known as the Green Shed, houses an extensive collection of 18th-century tools arranged in the original cobbled stalls of the barn. This arrangement gives an authentic glimpse into how rural families stored their most valuable equipment.
