HM Prison Bristol, prison in Bristol, England
HMP Bristol is a prison for men located in the Horfield area of Bristol, housing remand prisoners and convicted inmates. The facility spans multiple wings with individual and shared cells, visitor areas, work programs, and on-site healthcare services.
HMP Bristol opened in 1883 to replace an earlier jail dating to 1820, beginning with around 160 cells. The facility experienced significant unrest including riots in 1986 and 1991, and was the site of fourteen executions throughout its history, the last in 1963.
Visitors must be at least 18 years old, book ahead, and bring valid identification. Visit times occur mainly in the afternoon, and the facility is easily reached by public transport or car with street parking available.
In the 1950s, HMP Bristol operated the country's first pre-release hostel, a program designed to help prisoners prepare for life outside prison walls. This early innovation established a model for rehabilitation programs across Britain.
