Government Offices Great George Street, Government building in Westminster, England
Government Offices Great George Street is an administrative complex in Westminster that sprawls across several streets and houses multiple government departments. The building group connects various wings and includes underground spaces that are now open to the public.
The complex was designed by John Brydon, drawing inspiration from earlier plans for Whitehall Palace dating to the 1600s. Construction took place in two phases and was completed in the early 1900s.
The building functions as headquarters for multiple government departments, including HM Treasury, UK Export Finance, and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.
Part of the basement contains the Churchill War Rooms, which offers free access to government staff and paid admission for visitors. The complex sits centrally in Westminster and is easy to reach by public transport.
A private finance initiative contract funded a £140 million renovation in 2002, enabling the entire Treasury staff to work in one location for the first time.
