Heygate Estate, Housing estate in Walworth, United Kingdom
The Heygate Estate was a housing complex in Walworth with concrete buildings, elevated walkways and shared gardens between Walworth Road and New Kent Road. The development followed brutalist design principles with exposed concrete facades and horizontal residential blocks.
The estate was built between 1971 and 1974 following plans by architect Tim Tinker for Southwark Council. After the last residents moved out, complete demolition took place in 2014 to redevelop the Elephant & Castle area.
The concrete architecture and urban setting made the estate a frequent filming location for British cinema productions including Attack the Block and World War Z.
The former site sits near Elephant & Castle underground station and several bus lines with direct connections across London. The location is now part of a new residential district with different buildings and street layouts.
Before demolition, the estate served as a filming location for movies including Attack the Block and World War Z. The empty residential blocks offered film crews an authentic urban setting for action scenes.
