Perronet House, Residential tower near Elephant and Castle, London, United Kingdom
Perronet House is an eleven-story residential tower near Elephant and Castle built as social housing. The building uses an unusual layout where apartments span three levels within each unit, removing the external corridors found in typical London tower blocks.
Architect Roger Walters designed this social housing project for the Greater London Council, completed in May 1970. The building was part of postwar efforts to provide affordable homes as the Elephant and Castle area underwent significant urban development.
The building received recognition through a commendation in the 1971 Good Design In Housing awards for its modernist and brutalist architectural approach.
The ground floor garages were converted to Elephant Arcade in 2020, creating retail and workspace for local businesses. The location sits within easy reach of public transport and walking distance to the wider neighborhood.
A communal sundeck on the tenth floor offers residents a shared space with outdoor views. The scissor-section flat design, where apartments fold across multiple levels, remains an uncommon approach to tower living.
