Hatton Gallery, Art gallery in Newcastle upon Tyne, England
The Hatton Gallery is an art museum located within Newcastle University's Fine Art Building and displays a collection of around 3,500 works from different periods. The spaces contain paintings, prints, and other artistic objects ranging from Renaissance times to contemporary art.
The museum was founded in 1925 as part of the King Edward VII School of Art at Armstrong College in Newcastle. A major renovation in the 2010s modernized the building and expanded exhibition space for the growing collection.
The gallery displays works by established artists such as Francis Bacon and Victor Pasmore within its spaces. Visitors can discover pieces from various artistic movements of the 20th century and see how different creative approaches are presented together.
Admission is free and the gallery is open on weekdays and Saturdays. It is worth allowing enough time to explore the different exhibition areas at a leisurely pace.
The museum houses a rare Merz wall construction by Kurt Schwitters that was rescued and restored in 1965. This artwork made from paper, wood, and other materials is one of the few remaining examples of Schwitters' experimental art form.
