Newcastle Civic Centre, Municipal building in Haymarket, Newcastle upon Tyne, England
The Newcastle Civic Centre is a municipal building in Haymarket featuring a distinctive tower approximately 200 feet (60 m) tall and spacious halls with grand staircases. The structure spans multiple floors and contains various public areas designed for different civic functions and gatherings.
Construction of this administrative center began in 1960, replacing a Victorian Town Hall, and was completed in 1967. The building received its royal opening in 1968.
Bronze sculptures by John Robert Murray McCheyne decorate the building, including the River God Tyne at the entrance and seahorses on the tower. These artworks reflect the city's connection to the water and its maritime heritage.
The building is a five-minute walk from Newcastle Central Station and about 15 minutes from Newcastle International Airport with good bus connections. Nearby you will find numerous hotels, restaurants, and parking facilities, making it easy to reach by various means of transport.
President Jimmy Carter visited the building in 1977 and delivered a speech using local dialect. A commemorative stone in the grounds marks this unusual visit.
