High Rigg, Mountain summit in Lake District, England
High Rigg is a summit in the Lake District region and reaches a height of 766 meters. The mountain has rocky eastern slopes descending toward Stone Cove, while its western side is grassy and slopes down to Tongue Gill.
The name comes from Old English, where 'Rigg' refers to the bumpy and knobbly ridge that forms its distinctive shape. The geographical features have changed little over the centuries and continue to shape the landscape today.
The summit is well known among hikers and often included in collecting routes where walkers aim to climb multiple peaks across the region. This makes it a popular target for people who enjoy challenging themselves and ticking off hilltops.
There are several routes to climb this summit, with the most direct starting from Grasmere and running along the southwest ridge past Stone Arthur. The ascent is challenging but achievable, and route planning should depend on personal fitness and weather conditions.
At the summit stands a substantial stone cairn called Greatrigg Man that offers views over at least ten different lakes and moorland features. From this central vantage point, visitors can see much of the water-filled landscape that defines this mountain region.
