Thirlmere Aqueduct, Water aqueduct from Lake District to Manchester, England
The Thirlmere Aqueduct extends 96 miles through northern England, carrying water from Cumbria's reservoir to Manchester's urban population through concrete channels and tunnels.
Construction of this water transport system began in 1890 and concluded in 1925, meeting the increasing demands of Manchester during the industrial revolution period.
The inauguration ceremony in 1894 gathered local officials and residents at Albert Square, where water flowed through a temporary fountain marking industrial progress.
The system delivers 220 million liters of drinking water daily, supplying 11 percent of northwestern England's water needs through gravity-based flow mechanisms.
Engineers created the tunnel section under Dunmail Raise by mining from both ends, achieving a connection point within 20 centimeters of center alignment.
