Kilpeck Priory, Norman priory site in Herefordshire, England
Kilpeck Priory is the ruined remains of a Benedictine monastery located next to the Norman church of St Mary and St David in rural Herefordshire. The site contains scattered stone foundations and archaeological deposits spread across an open landscape.
This monastery was established in 1134 as a dependent priory under Gloucester Abbey. It declined financially during the 14th century and was eventually dissolved in 1428.
The grounds around the priory show traces of how monks lived and worked in this place over centuries. You can see where buildings once stood and find fragments of daily objects left behind.
The site is freely accessible and located about 8 miles southwest of Hereford near the A465 road. Wear sturdy footwear since the ground can be uneven and weather conditions may affect access to certain areas.
Despite its remote rural location, this priory was economically tied to distant Gloucester Abbey and relied on its resources for survival. This dependence on a faraway institution shaped its fortunes and eventually contributed to its downfall.
