Leazes Park, Urban park in Newcastle upon Tyne, England
Leazes Park is a Grade II listed urban park in Newcastle upon Tyne, laid out around a central lake with tree-lined paths running through open lawns. It also has tennis courts, a basketball court, a children's play area, and a café inside a historic lodge near the edge of the park.
Leazes Park opened in 1873 after local working people submitted a petition asking for public access to green space in the city. It was one of the first parks in the region created specifically in response to that kind of public demand.
Leazes Park sits close to Newcastle University, and on any given day the mix of students, families, and local residents gives the place a relaxed, everyday feel. The open lawns and winding paths are used for picnics, dog walks, and casual sport, making the park part of the daily routine for many people in the area.
The park has no fencing and can be entered from several points around its perimeter, so finding your way around is straightforward. Paths are mostly flat and accessible for wheelchair users, and the café near the edge of the park is a good place to start or end a visit.
The central lake was originally designed for ice-skating in winter and recreational boating, not for fishing. Today an angling club actively manages the water, which means the lake serves a purpose its designers never planned for.
