Liverpool Empire Theatre, Grade II listed theatre at Lime Street, Liverpool, England
The Liverpool Empire Theatre is a theatre building in Liverpool, England, located on Lime Street and protected as a Grade II listed structure. The facade displays columns and decorative carvings in limestone that give the building a grand appearance.
Architects William and Thomas Ridley Milburn designed the venue, which opened in 1925 on the site of the former Prince of Wales Theatre. The new building replaced a smaller structure that had previously stood on the same plot.
The building displays its name in large illuminated letters above the main entrance and welcomes visitors into a foyer with marble staircases and chandeliers. The auditorium spreads across multiple tiers, all offering direct views of the stage.
The location directly opposite Lime Street Station makes the venue easy to reach for guests arriving from other parts of the city or beyond. Evening performances typically start at fixed times, and tickets can be purchased in advance at the box office or online.
Inside, carved elephants serve as caryatids supporting the ceiling and balconies, a rare choice for a European theatre of this period. The decoration combines these exotic figures with Louis XVI style details throughout the halls and stairways.
