Wellington's Column, Memorial monument at William Brown Street, Liverpool, England.
Wellington's Column is a stone and bronze memorial on William Brown Street in Liverpool, England. The column rises 40 meters high with a statue of the Duke of Wellington at its summit overlooking the city center.
After Wellington's death in 1852, Liverpool launched a public subscription to build this memorial. The monument was completed with its relief panels in 1865.
The bronze panels on the pedestal depict scenes of military campaigns and British strength. These scenes catch the eye of anyone standing near the base of the column.
The memorial stands at the corner of William Brown Street and Lime Street and is freely viewable from outside at any time. Inside, 169 steps lead to a viewing platform accessible to visitors who want to climb them.
The statue of the Duke was cast from melted bronze collected from cannons captured at the Battle of Waterloo. This unusual material origin gives the monument a direct link to one of history's most significant military victories.
